And, now that you know a little bit about who we are and what we do, we’ll go ahead and introduce you to our March 2023 Calendar, available for download below. Furthermore, on this calendar you’ll find 31 days and three landmark dates labelled: St. Patrick’s Day, the first day of spring, and Daylight’s Savings Time. While St. Patrick’s Day is always on the 17th of every March, the other two holidays vary. The first day of spring can range anytime between March 19 and 21, depending on when the sun crosses the equator. In contrast, Daylight Savings Time (DST) is set to be the second Sunday of every March.

The Month of March

Currently, in the United States and in all other countries that use the modern day twelve month calendar, March is the third month of the year. However, believe it or not, it was not always this way. Back in ancient Rome, March was the first month of a ten month year. This is because the winter months of January and February didn’t exist and the start of spring, or the first of March, was deemed the start of the year. This mostly had to do with war.

So, you’re probably asking, “What do war and spring have in common?” First of all, in ancient Rome, war was very popular, but it ceased in the winter months. Therefore, in spring, when the weather was warmer, war was allowed to resume. This also explains where the month of March got its name. After Mars, the Roman God of War, of course!

March Holidays & Observances

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day stems from Irish culture and is celebrated every March 17 in the United States. On the Printable Calendar, you’ll find that St. Patrick’s day will be celebrated on Friday, March 17. The name of the holiday comes from the most noteworthy Patron Saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick.

Due to the four leaf clover and prominence of the color green in Irish culture, including on their country’s flag, green is an extremely popular color on St. Patrick’s Day. You’ll find many Americans wearing green on this day. In some places it’s even a tradition to pinch people who are not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day! You also might find some other items green throughout the day as well, including: food, milk, makeup, water and even street markings being painted over with green.

Furthermore, it’s especially popular on St. Patrick’s Day or on its closest weekend for local towns in America to hold parades where their fire departments, police departments, local businesses, and more dress up floats and play traditional Irish bagpipe music throughout the streets. While St. Patrick’s Day is not a federal holiday and most businesses will remain open, if a parade is being held some normal business hours or streets may experience disruptions due to the large crowds and parade floats.

First Day of Spring

On the March calendar, available for free download and printing below, you’ll find that the First Day of Spring falls on Monday, March 20. Believe it or not, the date of the first day of spring changes each year. This is because the start of spring is determined by the exact date that the sun crosses the equator, which happens to be March 20th of this year.

Daylight Savings Time

When you download the Blank Calendar below, you’ll see Daylight Savings Time falls on Sunday, March 12 this year. At 2 am on this Sunday, be sure to jump your clocks forward one hour. So as a result we can begin to enjoy longer hours of daylight. In order to recall exactly how Daylight Savings Time works, many use the phrases “spring forward” and also “fall back.” These are referring to the ideas that in the spring our clocks jump an hour ahead for Daylight Savings Time, and are set an hour backwards in the fall season.

While Daylight Savings Time was officially proposed as a bill in the United Kingdom in 1908, it was thought of prior to that for multiple reasons. Several people in history in differing parts of the world noticed the effects that the sun’s natural changes had on different facets of human life. While some noticed that more electricity was being burned as people weren’t fully functioning during normal daylight hours, others noticed that civilians seemed exhausted or still sleeping during morning daylight hours in the summer. And so, Daylight Savings Time was born. However, recently, there has been a movement to do away with Daylight Savings Time.
